Precise Placement of Lateral Maximizes Reservoir Exposure and Production Rates

Cuu Long Joint Operating Company, a joint venture operating the Cuu Long Prospect oil field offshore southern Vietnam, was seeing declining production and needed to maximize the length of horizontal laterals within thin 2–4 m oil sands. SLB helped address this challenge using the PeriScope bed boundary mapping service to guide geosteering in the reservoir.

SLB combined PeriScope with the PowerDrive X6 rotary steerable system to place the wells accurately and avoid exiting the target sands. The result was improved reservoir exposure in three target sands and production rates above expectations: 1,600 bbl/d for Well 1, 1,200 bbl/d for Well 2, and 1,500 bbl/d for Well 3, with low water cut and lateral lengths that exceeded the original 100 m objectives.
