PowerDrive Xcel RSS with Real-Time Gamma Ray Lands S-shaped Extended-Reach Well at 55° Inclination

SLB worked with a Russia Based Operating Company to drill a challenging S-shaped, extended-reach well offshore Russia. The operator needed to drop inclination from 86° to 55° while minimizing tortuosity through hard stringers and still collecting accurate formation data to support liner placement, geomechanics, and completion planning.

SLB recommended the PowerDrive Xcel rotary steerable system with real-time gamma ray, which provided precise trajectory control and in-depth formation measurements while drilling. The 2,000-m section was drilled and logged in one run, the well was landed at the planned 55° inclination, the 9 5/8-in liner was set above the reservoir, and postdrilling operations were improved by minimizing hole tortuosity.
