PowerDrive Orbit RSS Increases ROP 35 ft/h for Talisman on Marcellus Shale Wells

SLB worked with a large unconventional shale company drilling in the Marcellus Shale, where maintaining directional control while improving drilling efficiency was a challenge. The company needed better performance on horizontal wells in a difficult shale geology, and SLB provided directional drilling services using the PowerDrive Orbit rotary steerable system.

SLB implemented the PowerDrive Orbit RSS fitted with MDi516 and SDi516 drill bits to improve steering accuracy and drilling speed. Across four wells, the solution increased ROP by about 35 ft/h, added 840 ft of drilling in a 24-hour period, and saved 1.3 days, reducing overall rotary steerable well cost by as much as USD 70,000.
