Petronas Discovers Previously Undetected Channel Sand with Expected Production of 1,700 bbl/d

Petronas Carigali worked with SLB to improve understanding of a complex channel sand reservoir in Malaysia, where fluid contacts, lateral sand distribution, and formation dips were uncertain. The company needed better reservoir insight to place a horizontal well optimally and target a sand expected to produce 900 bbl/d.

SLB recommended its GeoSphere reservoir mapping-while-drilling service to map the reservoir in real time and refine the seismic model. The well was landed on target, and the mapping revealed an additional hydrocarbon-bearing channel sand with expected production of 1,700 bbl/d; Petronas Carigali then drilled a sidetrack to develop it, increasing initial anticipated recovery by 88% versus the original 900 bbl/d target and gaining key data for future reservoir management.
