PetroChina Improves ROP 200% and Reduces Drilling Time by 17.6 Days
SLB worked with PetroChina Company Ltd. to improve drilling performance in the Weiyuan block in Sichuan, China, where a high-pressure, highly laminated shale gas formation was causing slow rate of penetration, excessive viscosity, high friction, and long drilling times when using conventional bottom-hole assemblies. PetroChina wanted to reduce the number of BHA trips and shorten the curve and lateral drilling cycle, and SLB proposed using PowerDrive Archer rotary steerable system and DynaForce DTX motor.
SLB deployed the PowerDrive Archer RSS with the DynaForce DTX thin-wall motor to eliminate slide drilling, improve wellbore quality, and boost drilling efficiency in the complex 3D well path. The result was a 200% improvement in ROP, a single run of 2,310 m from kickoff to TD, and completion of the 8.5-in section in 10.7 days, with the curve and lateral drilled 17.6 days ahead of plan and minimal tool wear.
