PetroChina Ensures Long-Term Well Integrity in Underground Gas Storage Wells
PetroChina Company Ltd. needed to construct underground gas storage wells in a depleted reservoir while maintaining long-term well integrity under changing downhole pressure and temperature conditions. SLB was brought in to support the project with FlexSTONE advanced flexible cement technology and CemSTRESS cement sheath stress analysis software.
SLB used a customized engineering workflow to model stress conditions, design cement properties, and validate the slurry before pumping it downhole. The result was 32 successfully drilled and cemented wells with zero losses, excellent cement-to-formation bonding, and well integrity expected to last 30 years or more, helping PetroChina avoid costly remedial work and safely build western China’s first underground gas storage facility with a capacity of 4.51 × 10^9 m^3.
