Petrobras Recovers Stuck Drillstring at 4,540 m, Saves BHA Worth USD 2 Million

Petrobras was drilling a 12¼-in deepwater well offshore Brazil when it faced repeated stuck pipe problems in a harsh igneous formation, including a drillstring stuck at 4,540 m. SLB provided the Hydra-Jar AP double-acting hydraulic drilling jar to help free the stuck drillstring and directional BHA.

Using the SLB Hydra-Jar AP placed at the optimal point in the drillstring, Petrobras was able to apply repeated jarring force until the string was recovered after 1,007 jar fires over 120 hours. SLB’s solution helped save a BHA valued at USD 2 million, recover other downhole tools in good condition, and allow the well to continue as planned without reentry or a new well.
