Permanent Magnet Motor Saves Cepsa 21% on Power Requirements for ESP-Lifted Well

SLB worked with Cepsa Colombia to reduce lifting costs in wells using electric submersible pumps, especially where diesel generators made electrical power expensive. The company wanted to lower power consumption without affecting oil production, and turned to SLB for help with ESP-lifted well technology.

SLB replaced conventional AC induction motors with permanent magnet motors (PMMs) in the ESP system. In a field test, the PMM cut surface apparent power requirements by at least 21%, increased motor power factor from 78% to 96%, and reduced reactive power by 65%. The company also identified additional wells for future PMM installations, with potential annual savings of up to USD 950,000 in high-cost power fields.
