A SLB Case Study
SLB worked with Ecopetrol in a mature onshore Colombia field where a horizontal well had to be placed in a target sand with high structural dip and variable resistivity, making geosteering difficult and increasing the risk of leaving the reservoir. The company needed to maximize reservoir contact in a 2,007-ft drain section while avoiding costly sidetracks.
SLB used a mud-motor BHA with the PeriScope HD service for multilayer bed boundary detection to keep the well in the high-resistivity zone and guide real-time geosteering. The result was a 2,007-ft lateral drilled in a single run with dogleg severity kept below 3°/100 ft, a 97% net-to-gross ratio, and high-resolution dip measurements that matched the geological model and improved reservoir understanding.
