Perforating Design Using Sonic Scanner Platform's Acoustic Data Reduces Skin by >60%, Colombia

SLB worked with Llanos basin Operating Company in Colombia, where the customer wanted to improve perforating design for an exploration well. The challenge was to penetrate beyond near-wellbore formation alteration and reduce skin by using geomechanics data rather than relying only on conventional petrophysical data.

SLB used the Sonic Scanner acoustic scanning platform and SPAN Rock stressed-rock perforating analysis to build radial profiles of the alteration zone and key geomechanical parameters, then selected PowerJet Nova extradeep penetrating shaped charges. The resulting perforation penetrated beyond the alteration zone and reduced skin to 0.766, more than 60% lower than the modeled conventional perforating case of 2, with practically no adverse effect on flow performance.
