A SLB Case Study
PEMEX needed to drill a complex J-shaped exploratory well in the Sureste basin offshore Mexico, aiming for a 25° curve in a reservoir expected to exceed 374 degF while dealing with heavy mud weight. SLB recommended the PowerDrive ICE ultraHT rotary steerable system, along with TeleScope telemetry and arcVISION resistivity measurements, to help achieve the directional objective in extreme heat.
SLB’s integrated bottomhole assembly, including a SHARC drill bit selected through the IDEAS design platform, built the curve from 17.5° to 26.3° and held the tangent in automatic mode. The well reached both geological targets, the system operated for 304 hours at bottomhole temperatures up to 358 degF, and PEMEX decided to standardize the PowerDrive ICE RSS for future wells in the same high-temperature reservoir.
