PEMEX Improves Trajectory and Saves 9 Days with High-Pressure, High-Temperature RSS

PEMEX needed to improve the trajectory of an 8½-in tangent section in a shallow-water Gulf of Mexico reservoir with temperatures above 165°C and pressures above 15,000 psi. After a packed BHA veered off track in abrasive formations, the company turned to SLB for a high-temperature directional drilling solution, using the PowerDrive ICE ultraHT rotary steerable system (RSS) to help recover the well path and reach target.

SLB recommended the field-tested PowerDrive ICE ultraHT RSS, rated to 200°C, to provide precise directional control in the extreme heat and pressure of the well. The system steered the borehole from 77° to 57°, increased rate of penetration by 16%, and drilled the section to TD 9 days ahead of schedule, saving PEMEX about USD 1.35 million in rig time.
