PDO Evaluates Pure Formation Water Acquired from Submillidarcy Carbonate Transition Zone

Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) needed to verify cleanup of WBM filtrate from formation water in an extremely low-mobility carbonate transition zone with little salinity contrast and the added complexity of formation oil. SLB supported the project with the Ora intelligent wireline formation testing platform, which was designed for focused fluid sampling and real-time downhole fluid analysis in challenging conditions.

Using SLB’s Ora platform, PDO was able to establish flow, measure resistivity and temperature in the guard and sample lines, and confidently distinguish WBM filtrate from pure formation water while confirming sensor accuracy. The measurements showed cleanup in real time, enabled accurate interpretation of contacts and saturation, kept station times short to reduce wellbore risk, and may reduce or eliminate the need for expensive surface analysis.
