PDC Drill Bits with RockStorm Technology Increase ROP by 29% for Canbriam Energy Canada

Canbriam Energy was drilling in the Montney shale play in British Columbia, Canada, and needed to improve efficiency in an 8¾-in vertical wellbore through hard, abrasive, and interbedded formations with high UCS. SLB’s Smith Bits and IDEAS optimized PDC bit technology were used to address cutter damage, wear, and declining ROP.

SLB recommended fitting three identical 8¾-in MASi613 PDC bits with RockStorm wear-resistant high-impact PDC cutter technology. The solution increased average ROP by 29% versus standard cutters, with the three vertical sections drilled at 45 m/h, 43 m/h, and 40 m/h, and it also improved dull condition with less critical shoulder wear and damage.
