Case Study: North Dakota Operating Company achieves 23% higher average ROP with SLB’s RockStorm PDC bit

A SLB Case Study

Preview of the North Dakota Operating Company Case Study

PDC Bit with RockStorm Technology Improves Average ROP by 23%, Bakken Shale

SLB worked with North Dakota Operating Company, an operator in the Bakken shale, to reduce drilling time in an 8¾-in curve section while maintaining a smooth, vibration-free drilling operation and a high-quality wellbore. The challenge was to improve drilling efficiency and cutter durability in a difficult, interbedded formation with high compressive strength.

SLB recommended a reconfigured 8¾-in MDSi616 PDC bit with RockStorm wear-resistant high-impact PDC cutter technology. The bit drilled 2,010 ft at an average rate of 98 ft/h, improving average ROP by 23% versus offset runs and delivering a high-quality, full-gauge wellbore that maximized contact with the reservoir.
