A SLB Case Study
Pacific Rubiales worked with SLB after a failed cementing job left cement inside a 4-in drillpipe in an exploration well in Colombia. Because the well was highly deviated, wireline backoff or cutting was not feasible, and coiled tubing was the only practical option to recover the cemented section and save the well.
SLB recommended a thru-tubing intervention package using a mill, underreamer, 2⅛-in motor, and hydraulic pipe cutter to clean out cement and cut the pipe below the casing shoe. The operation milled 1,207 ft of drillpipe ID, recovered 4,446 ft of drillpipe, and enabled Pacific Rubiales to perform an openhole sidetrack and save the well.
