Optimized Drilling System Saves Afren 8.4 Days, USD 4.2 Million with Shoe-to-Shoe Performance

Afren worked with SLB to drill horizontal wells shoe to shoe in the shallow offshore Ebok field in Nigeria, where soft, unconsolidated formations, shallow TVDs, and complex well paths made it difficult to maintain good dogleg assurance, achieve high ROP, and stay in zone. The challenge was to drill efficiently through faulted intervals while avoiding mud losses and costly rework.

SLB deployed an integrated team approach using the PowerDrive Xceed rotary steerable system, PeriScope HD multilayer bed boundary detection service, SHARC drill bits, and drilling fluid simulation software to optimize well placement and drilling performance. The result was two wells drilled shoe to shoe in single runs, 100% in-zone reservoir placement, 76% improvement in below-rotary ROP, no NPT, and savings of 8.4 rig days valued at about USD 4.2 million, or 25% off AFE.
