A SLB Case Study
SLB worked with Lukoil-Komi to reduce drilling time and risk while drilling the 155.6-mm horizontal section of a development well in Russia’s Timan-Pechora region. The company had been using positive displacement motors, but low penetration rates and multiple bit runs often made the section take up to 50 days to drill.
SLB designed an application-specific bottomhole assembly using the IDEAS integrated design platform, combining a SHARC PDC drill bit, PowerDrive X6 rotary steerable system, ImPulse MWD tools, and adnVISION services. The optimized system drilled the 1,152-m horizontal section in one run, increased average rate of penetration by 56%, finished 5 days ahead of plan, and delivered good hole quality for successful liner placement to bottom.
