A SLB Case Study
SLB worked with an offshore Malaysian operating company that was drilling 8½-in. sections in a stick/slip-prone formation and facing severe torsional vibration that was limiting progress. The challenge was to improve rate of penetration in a difficult offshore well environment using a more stable bottomhole assembly and drilling design approach.
SLB used its i-DRILL engineered drilling system design, along with the IDEAS integrated drillbit design platform and DBOS drillbit optimization system, to analyze drilling data, simulate the application, and redesign the BHA. The optimized setup replaced the reaming stabilizer with a regular stabilizer and tuned weight-on-bit and other parameters, cutting torsional vibration significantly and boosting ROP by 54%, from 7.8 m/h to 12.1 m/h in the third well.
