Operator replaces drop gyro surveying with GyroSphere service that delivers real-time data for kickoff and steering

SLB worked with Field Onshore Operating Company, an onshore operator in Ecuador drilling dense well clusters where magnetic interference from nearby wells made MWD surveys and magnetic toolface measurements unreliable. The customer needed a way to improve kickoff and steering accuracy in crowded tophole sections while avoiding the delays of conventional drop gyro surveying.

SLB recommended deploying the GyroSphere MEMS gyro-while-drilling service in the BHA so surveys could be taken while drilling, including during connections. This eliminated slickline/drop gyro flat time, improved real-time anticollision management confidence, and saved up to 12 hours of rig time per well, with 32 hours saved across three wells. The operator then adopted the SLB solution for the remaining drilling operations.
