A SLB Case Study
SLB worked with a leading Australia operating company that needed to drill a long horizontal well offshore Australia while staying within a very narrow 5–10 ft target window below the reservoir top. The goal was to maximize exposure to good-quality sands, avoid the oil/water contact, and minimize attic oil in a challenging field with thin oil columns and interbedded reservoir layers.
SLB used the GeoSphere reservoir mapping-while-drilling service to provide real-time subsurface mapping and steering support during the 6,890-ft horizontal section. The solution revealed good-quality sands about 10 ft lower than expected and mapped a 3°–5° structural dip, allowing the well to stay on target, avoid the oil/water contact, and optimize reservoir exposure; the operator was satisfied enough to select SLB for four additional wells.
