Operator Improves Formation Evaluation in Unconventional Shale Using LithoFlex Service, USA

SLB worked with LithoFlex, an operator drilling a lateral well in organic-rich shale in the USA, to improve formation evaluation in a play with more than 10% TOC. The customer needed better identification of mineralogy, TOC, kerogen, and porosity to place the well in the target zone and support completion design.

SLB used the LithoFlex multifactor shale-cuttings evaluation-while-drilling service, including DRIFTS, to measure key rock properties in near real time from cuttings. The service identified formation tops and the target zone, helped land the well in the condensate fluid window, and delivered kerogen density values of 1.41 to 1.46 g/cm3, improving maturity interpretation and producing more accurate shale porosity estimates than conventional LWD methods.
