ONGC Saves 36 Days Drilling Time in Offshore India

ONGC worked with SLB to tackle drilling challenges in offshore India while drilling a 12¼-in section of hard, abrasive basaltic formation in the Deccan Trap. The company needed to increase rate of penetration, improve cost efficiency, and avoid bit damage and nonproductive time caused by interbedded weathered and basaltic formations.

SLB recommended an optimized rotary BHA with two stabilizers and a hybrid AxeBlade ridged diamond element bit with Stinger conical diamond elements. Using this setup, ONGC drilled 952 m and then 960 m at average ROPs of 1.9 m/h and 1.83 m/h, completing the section with fewer trips, saving nearly 36 offshore rig days, improving meters per bit by nine times, and reducing cost per meter by 40%.
