A SLB Case Study
ONGC needed to drill 300 m through a very hard, abrasive basalt formation in offshore India and wanted to reduce the number of roller cone bit runs needed to complete the well section. SLB proposed using a 12¼-in Z813 StingBlade bit with RockStorm wear-resistant high-impact PDC cutter technology, based on simulation work for this hard-to-drill application.
SLB’s StingBlade bit drilled 229 m of basalt in one run at an average ROP of 2.2 m/h, more than doubling the offset average ROP of 1.1 m/h and setting the field’s lowest cost per meter while drilling basalt. The run eliminated 6 bit runs, and it was the first StingBlade bit run in basalt worldwide.
