A SLB Case Study
SLB worked with Offshore Malaysia Well Operating Company, which was drilling subnormal pressured carbonate reservoirs and needed a safer way to control gas migration, avoid total losses, and meet well barrier requirements. Previous wells in the area had lost more than 25,000 bbls of drilling fluid, making well control during drilling, tripping, and liner running a major challenge.
SLB, using M-I SWACO’s @balance Services Continuous Annular Injection mud cap drilling approach, injected seawater continuously to maintain hole fill and control pressure while drilling. The method eliminated kicks and well control issues, kept the well overbalanced in the annulus, cut drilling time by more than 50%, reduced fluid cost to almost zero, and improved safety with no non-productive time; in the A-3 well, the 8½-in section was drilled in 2 days instead of 4, increasing drilling efficiency by about 30%.
