New Multilayer LWD Service Helps Achieve 100 Percent Net-to-Gross Ratio

BHP Petroleum needed to drill and complete a well in the Pyrenees development within oil-bearing sandstone, staying within 3 m of the reservoir’s upper boundary while distinguishing dipping channel sands from the top structure, avoiding exits into overlying shale, and keeping dogleg severity within limits. SLB addressed the challenge with its PeriScope HD multilayer bed boundary detection service.

Using SLB’s PeriScope HD service, the team continuously mapped the reservoir top and internal layering while geosteering the well in real time. The well was drilled an average of 3 m below the top boundary, achieved a 100 percent net-to-gross ratio, and remained in the target sweet spot; BHP Petroleum also planned to use the service in two more horizontal wells in the field.
