A SLB Case Study
SLB worked with Northeast Natural Energy in the Appalachian Basin to improve drilling efficiency and well quality across a long tangent section, a high-DLS curve, and an 8,682-ft lateral in the Southwest Marcellus Shale. The operator faced a difficult well plan with the largest pad step-out, a kickoff at 56° inclination, 3,160 ft of drilling through abrasive sandstone, and a need to avoid using two BHAs.
SLB recommended the NeoSteer CLx extreme curve and lateral at-bit steerable system with an AxeBlade ridged diamond element bit and xBolt G2 accelerated drilling service. The system drilled 13,819 ft MD through tangent, curve, and lateral in one run, kept the wellbore 91% within a tight 4-ft zone, reduced tortuosity, and maintained high ROP by avoiding sliding, delivering a high-quality borehole and eliminating the need to pull out and change the BHA.
