Multitelemetry Accelerates ROP for Two-Mile Lateral and Reduces Drill Time by 1.36 Days

SLB worked with Permian Basin Operating Company, an operator in the Permian Basin, Texas, that needed to drill two-mile laterals faster and more efficiently while geosteering within a narrow pay zone. High rate of penetration depended on reliable real-time telemetry and dense data from the bottomhole assembly, especially to avoid time lost during surveys and connections.

SLB recommended the xBolt G2 accelerated drilling service, which transmits survey data in EM mode while pumps are down and provides higher data rates plus accurate hold-inclination and azimuth steering. With the service integrated into the BHA, the operator drilled 9,212 ft in 52.5 hours, reduced lateral connection time from 4.28 to 1.78 minutes, saved 4.5 hours, and drilled the lateral 1.36 days faster than with conventional surveys, while improving average on-bottom footage per day by 26% in the curve and 22% in the lateral.
