Case Study: Equinor achieves higher H₂S scavenging and improved production with SLB's KI-3138

Multifunctional H2 S scavenger and corrosion inhibitor addresses integrity challenges and production output limitations of a mature subsea North Sea field

Equinor was operating a mature subsea North Sea field on the Norwegian Continental Shelf with high-H₂S wells, corrosion risks in carbon steel pipelines, and topside H₂S scavenging limits that left gas above export specifications and low-pressure process areas with up to 2,800 ppm H₂S. SLB was the vendor behind the recommended solution, using its Production Technologies KI-3138 H₂S scavenger and corrosion inhibitor to address the environmental, safety, and integrity challenges.

SLB implemented KI-3138 to scavenge H₂S before it reached the topside manifold, protecting the subsea production pipeline while improving process performance without modifying the chemical injection or topside systems. At a 100 ppmv injection rate, the product scavenged 470 kg of H₂S per day, reduced H₂S in the low-pressure system to below 1,000 ppm, improved separation and water quality, lowered iron sulfide precipitation, and enabled higher production from restricted wells with no capex required.
