A SLB Case Study
SLB worked with a Middle East Operating Company on a pilot water injection well that had been perforated underbalanced and was only taking 20 m3/d before eventually stopping acceptance of water. The operator needed a way to improve injectivity and reservoir communication, so SLB proposed an extreme overbalance perforating approach using PowerJet Omega deep-penetrating shaped charges.
SLB designed a fit-for-purpose tubing-conveyed perforating string with 4.5-in, 5 spf PowerJet Omega charges and applied high pressure with nitrogen and brine/solvent to drive deeper perforation tunnels and stimulate the formation. The result was a jump in injection rate from 20 m3/d to 500 m3/d, with postperforation tests showing rates above 500 m3/d and the operation completed faster and at lower cost than previous methods.
