A SLB Case Study
Mangyshlak Munai Operating Company was developing the Pridorozhnoye gas field in southern Kazakhstan and needed to reduce drilling time while improving bit durability in hard, cherty carbonates and in shale interbedded with sandstone and gravel. SLB was brought in to help address poor ROP, damaged cutting structures, and frequent bit trips in this highly varied formation using StingBlade conical diamond element bits.
SLB recommended StingBlade bits with Stinger conical diamond elements combined with a high-torque positive displacement motor, supported by the DBOS drillbit optimization system. The solution improved durability and efficiency, helping Mangyshlak Munai drill the 8½-in section of Well 17 in 35 days, save 27 rig days and an estimated USD 486,000, and increase ROP by 55% versus the first offset well while setting a field ROP record for the three wells drilled in the field.
