A SLB Case Study
Lundin Petroleum was drilling several wells offshore Norway, including in the Johan Sverdrup Field, and needed a faster, more reliable way to identify formation tops, confirm depths while drilling, and distinguish uncertain rock types in the Draupne Formation and Rotliegendes Group. SLB provided the EcoFlex multifactor cuttings evaluation-while-drilling service from Geoservices to improve mineralogy evaluation and support downhole petrophysical interpretation.
Using SLB’s EcoFlex service with high-resolution digital microscopy and X-ray diffraction, Lundin evaluated cuttings at surface in near-real time, analyzing samples every 10 m in nonreservoir intervals and every 3 m in reservoir intervals. The service eliminated rock-typing uncertainty across 200 samples, helped identify formation tops and distinguish alluvial from marine sands, and improved detection of hydrocarbon-bearing sands, giving Lundin better field understanding for future well design and optimization.
