LUKOIL-Komi Increases ROP 70% in Horizon Previously Undrillable with PDC Bits in One Run

LUKOIL-Komi, part of Lukoil, needed to drill a highly abrasive formation in Russia with PDC bits in a single run while maintaining cutter integrity and reducing trips. SLB supported the effort in the Oshskoye Field’s Starooskolsky horizon, where conventional bits had struggled in the highly cemented, abrasive sandstone.

SLB recommended StingBlade conical diamond element bits with a PowerPak steerable motor, and the integrated drilling program enabled LUKOIL-Komi to drill the Starooskolsky horizon with a PDC bit in one run for the first time. The operator cut the section to two bits in two runs, increased average ROP by 70%, and saved 9.2 days versus AFE and 1.1 days versus the best previously drilled well.
