A SLB Case Study
Apache Energy Limited faced difficult cementing conditions in the Permian Basin, where highly depleted and naturally fractured formations caused severe lost circulation and made it hard to place cement to the required top-of-cement level. The company needed a cost-effective way to meet local regulatory requirements, protect the cement from corrosive water, and avoid expensive remedial work. SLB provided the Losseal family of reinforced composite mat pills and a specialized placement technique to address the challenge.
SLB pumped the engineered Losseal pills ahead of the cement slurry in a specific sequence, allowing cement to be lifted to target depths even in wells with up to 67 bbl/h lost circulation. The approach achieved more than USD 25,000 in savings per well by avoiding squeeze cementing, eliminated the need for a multistage tool and saved an average of USD 40,000 per well, and met all regulatory top-of-cement requirements. SLB reported that the technology has been used in more than 170 wells with over a 90% success rate in mitigating losses while cementing.
