A SLB Case Study
SLB worked with Eagle Ford Shale to better understand mineralogy and organic content in an Eagle Ford shale oil reservoir, with the main challenge of accurately determining how much movable liquid hydrocarbon was present so completions could be optimized. The company needed to separate kerogen from producible oil within total organic carbon using tools that could distinguish reservoir contents more clearly.
SLB solved this with Litho Scanner high-definition spectroscopy service and the CMR-Plus magnetic resonance tool, comparing kerogen-insensitive porosity from NMR with kerogen- and fluid-sensitive porosity from density measurements corrected by Litho Scanner data. The approach quantified TOC, kerogen volume, and liquid hydrocarbons, and laboratory core analysis confirmed the measurements. As a result, Eagle Ford Shale could confidently assess reservoir quality and optimize completion design based on a clearer estimate of producible oil.
