Integrating RSS, Reamer, and PDC Bit Saves 6 Days in Shallow Persian Gulf Formation

SLB worked with Persian Gulf Operating Company to drill a shallow offshore oil field through interbedded limestone, anhydrite, and shale. The operator needed to drill and underream a 14 1/2-in section efficiently while minimizing shock and vibration, after a previous offset well required separate drilling and hole-opening runs that took nearly 17 days.

SLB used its i-DRILL engineered drilling system design to model a customized BHA with a PowerDrive Xceed 900 rotary steerable system, an MDi816 PDC drill bit, a Rhino XS hydraulically expandable reamer, and a WELL COMMANDER ball-activated drilling valve. By optimizing the drilling parameters, SLB helped the operator drill and underream the interval in about 10.7 to 11 days, saving 6.2 days and approximately USD 744,000 while preserving the cutting structure and staying within torque limits.
