Integrating Petrophysical Analysis with 3D Seismic Data Helps Build Map of Marcellus Sweet Spots

SLB worked with Marcellus Shale Independent Operating Company, an independent operator in Pennsylvania’s Marcellus Shale, to understand why production was highly variable across laterals and to find a reliable way to rank drilling locations. After an initial well success, the next 34 laterals delivered inconsistent results, and the operator needed a better way to predict reservoir quality and improve completion decisions.

SLB collaborated with the operator’s team using petrotechnical expertise, Petrel E&P software, advanced LWD data from EcoScope and sonicVISION, pilot well logs, and 3D seismic analysis to build a predictive map of Marcellus sweet spots. The model was validated against production and helped identify high-ranking locations, guiding the completion of three additional wells that delivered strong results, including two that ranked in the upper quartile and one well that became one of the best in the acreage area.
