Integrated Seismic-to-Simulation Workflow Identifies Highest-Productivity Sweet Spots in Major Shale Gas Play

a leading gas production company was working in a major shale gas play with widely variable reservoir quality and production that could differ by a factor of three or more between wells. SLB, working with Schlumberger petrotechnical experts and the Petrel E&P software platform, was brought in to help better understand the factors controlling reservoir quality, natural fractures, and gas productivity so the company could improve drilling, completion, and well placement decisions.

SLB implemented an integrated seismic-to-simulation workflow that combined core, log, seismic, image log, geomechanical, and production data to build and calibrate a 3D dual-porosity reservoir model. The model was crossvalidated and history matched to identify and rank the highest-productivity sweet spots, guide lateral placement and completion design, and account for local reservoir and geomechanical properties. As a result, the operator could more reliably predict performance and design more effective completions, including in wells that ultimately produced 3 bcf.
