Integrated P&A BHA Helps Set Bridge Plug and Mill and Underream 150-ft Window in a Single Run

SLB worked with a leading North Sea operating company planning a P&A operation in the UK sector of the North Sea. The challenge was to mill a 150-ft window in 9⅝-in casing and underream the open hole in a single trip so an abandonment cement plug could be placed efficiently and with reduced regulatory risk.

SLB deployed the ProMILL trip-saving milling and underreaming system with the WavEdge ridged milling element and WELL COMMANDER ball-activated drilling circulating valve to improve milling performance and cuttings removal. In one run, the team set a bridge plug, conditioned the well, milled and underreamed the window, and completed the job in 50 hours, achieving 4.5 ft/h ROP, only 30% cutter wear, and saving 3.5 rig days and USD 600,000.
