A SLB Case Study
SLB worked with Noble Energy on a deepwater Gulf of Mexico drilling challenge: minimizing the time needed to enlarge a rathole in a 12¼-in by 14½-in hole section without adding an extra cleanout trip. The operation required a drilling BHA that could handle hole enlargement efficiently while preserving measurement and directional performance in a complex deepwater well.
SLB designed an integrated dual-reamer drilling system using a 12¼-in MDi716 PDC bit, PowerDrive X6 rotary steerable system, Rhino XC on-demand reamer, and Rhino XS hydraulically expandable reamer, along with SLB LWD tools. The system drilled the 1,221-ft section at an average 84.5 ft/h, enlarged 178 ft of rathole from 12¼ in to 14½ in in 3.5 hours, and avoided a dedicated cleanout run, saving Noble Energy an estimated 16 hours of rig time.
