Case Study: Novatek NTC achieves record-long ERD and first multilateral well in mainland Russia with SLB integrated drilling system

Integrated drilling system delivers extended-reach wells to maximize production and recovery offshore northwestern Siberia

SLB worked with Novatek, Russia’s largest independent natural gas producer, to drill and complete four extended-reach wells from onshore locations in northwestern Siberia. The project faced a tight mud environment, wellbore instability, high geological uncertainty, unknown pore pressure, and a narrow mud-weight window that made drilling the planned sections difficult.

SLB engineered an application-specific drilling system using technologies from Schlumberger, Smith Bits, and M-I SWACO, including SonicScope, StethoScope, DigiScope, adnVISION, and real-time geomechanics support. The integrated solution enabled Novatek to drill three offshore ERD wells, modify plans to add a fourth well, and set records by drilling the longest extended-reach well and the first multilateral well onshore Russia, while maintaining stable field production.
