A SLB Case Study
SLB worked with Alaska Operating Company to tackle hole enlargement while drilling in unstable shale in Alaska. The operator needed to enlarge a 9 7/8-in. pilot hole to 11 in. while minimizing shock, vibration, stick/slip, and rig time, and while preserving wellbore integrity.
SLB implemented an integrated bottomhole assembly using the Rhino XC 9250 on-demand hydraulically actuated reamer, PowerDrive X6 rotary steerable system, and low-solids nondispersed fluids. The team drilled 3,146 ft ahead and underreamed 6,422 ft in one run, maintained wellbore stability, improved hole cleaning, and achieved an excellent casing run with only manageable tight spots near TD.
