Integrated BHA Drills Salamander Energy Sidetrack in One Run Per Section

SLB worked with Salamander Energy to drill a horizontal sidetrack well, BA-12H ST2, in the Bualuang field offshore Thailand. The challenge was to boost oil production from a shallow reservoir by drilling through soft formations while minimizing stick/slip, vibration, and poor hole quality.

SLB designed an integrated bottomhole assembly using the EcoScope LWD service, an application-specific PDC bit, and PowerDrive Archer and PowerDrive X6 rotary steerable systems, along with PeriScope bed boundary mapping in the horizontal section. The well was drilled in just two runs, each section in one run, with the 8 1/2-in section achieving a 66% increase in ROP to 56.8 m/h, and the 6 1/8-in section placed within 2 m of the reservoir top as planned.
