A SLB Case Study
SLB worked with PDC Energy in the Denver-Julesburg basin to improve rate of penetration in a vertical and curve section drilled through soft sandstone while maintaining toolface control and buildup rate. PDC Energy needed better performance than the conventional five-blade PDC bits they had been using, which were limited by cutter depth of cut, balling, and low drilling efficiency in the soft formation.
SLB addressed the challenge with a three-blade StingBlade conical diamond element bit with utility gauge pads. The redesigned bit improved drilling and hydraulic efficiency, stabilization, and steerability, increasing overall on-bottom ROP by 39.2%, reducing footage required to slide by 30.6% per well, and saving PDC Energy 7.5 drilling hours, with enhanced BUR and toolface controllability versus the baseline bit.
