Innovative Completion Design and Job Execution Result in 100% Gravel Pack in 136° Fishhook Well

SLB worked with Offshore Southeast Asia Operating Company, which needed an efficient way to develop shallow offshore hydrocarbon prospects and control sand production in a long, steep “fishhook” well drilled from an onshore location. The openhole interval exceeded 700 meters, had six zones, and reached an inverted angle of up to 136°, creating a high risk of bridging and incomplete gravel packing.

SLB designed and executed a gravel-pack system using OptiPac Alternate Path openhole gravel-pack screens, Hornet skid-mounted gravel-pack blender, ClearPAC polymer-free gravel-pack fluid, fast-acting oil-swellable packers, pressure-activated diverter valves, and an antiswab washdown service tool. The result was a full 100% annular gravel pack below fracture pressure with zero sand production, meeting production and injection targets and leading to 10 additional fishhook wells being completed along the shore.
