Hyperbolic Bit Enhances ROP by 17% While Maintaining Complex Well Trajectory

SLB worked with a large operating company in Thailand to drill an 8½-in interval through interbedded shale and sandstone in the Gulf of Thailand. The customer needed to maintain a complex well trajectory while dealing with soft rock at the top of the section, increasing UCS downhole, and bit dulls caused by hard stringers and high-rpm, high-ROP drilling conditions.

SLB recommended the HyperBlade hyperbolic diamond element bit to improve durability and steerability in the mixed formation. The bit drilled the interval at an average 1,282 ft/h, delivering 17% higher ROP than the 1,092 ft/h benchmark while using 16% less WOB, and it maintained better directional control with less reactive torque and improved performance in build-and-turn sections.
