Preview of the Denmark Oil Based Company Case Study

High-performance drilling fluid and micronized additive helps minimize ECD values and reduce barite sag in tough sidetrack offshore Denmark

SLB worked with Denmark Oil Based Company, an offshore operator in Denmark, to address severe drilling challenges in a faulted 7,139-ft section. The company needed to lower equivalent circulating density, reduce barite sag, and avoid losses while drilling, running, and cementing casing in a troublesome interval after conventional oil-based mud caused heavy losses.

SLB recommended the RheGuard flat rheology drilling fluid system formulated with the MicroBar micronized weighting additive, along with a pretreatment using ONE-MUL liquid emulsifier package and lime. The system maintained low rheology and low sag while drilling the sidetrack to TD in eight days, and the operator was able to run and cement casing successfully with no major problems. Measured field trial results included 0.25 lbm/galUS sag, 35.3 cP plastic viscosity, 22 lbm/100 ft² yield point, and 3.7 Pa 10-second gel strength.
