A SLB Case Study
SLB worked with Cygnus Field in the UK Southern North Sea to address the challenge of geosteering a slimhole horizontal well through a thinly bedded, low-resistivity Leman Sandstone formation with subtle contrasts and local faulting. The goal was to stay within the most productive interval while maximizing production value, using reservoir mapping and bed-boundary detection in a very complex environment.
SLB combined the GeoSphere HD 475 reservoir-mapping-while-drilling service with the PeriScope HD multilayer bed boundary detection service. The first worldwide combined run delivered ultradeep, high-resolution mapping, detected multiple bed boundaries up to 40 ft TVD away, and continuously established the target’s true stratigraphic thickness at about 60 ft. This gave the operator greater confidence in drilling decisions, optimized the wellpath within the reservoir, and helped achieve higher flow rates while avoiding a risky fracture stimulation.
