Flare Redesign Enables Continuously Flowing High CO2 Concentrations in Heavy Oil Well Offshore Vietnam

SLB worked with a leading heavy oil well offshore Vietnam company that needed to monitor fluid changes and maintain efficient flaring during a CO2 injection and flowback test in a heavy oil reservoir offshore Vietnam. The operator was running a pilot huff ’n’ puff test to evaluate CO2 injection for enhanced recovery and needed accurate production data without interrupting operations.

SLB redesigned the flare system and temporary surface facilities, using metal-to-metal seals, onsite fluid analysis with PVT Express, and a new burner concept to handle high-CO2 produced gas continuously. The result was reliable, uninterrupted flaring with no spillage into the sea, while CO2 concentrations were measured frequently and accurately, reaching as high as 97% during flowback before declining to 0% by the end of the test.
