First Deepwater MPD Integrated Solution Enables Drilling 5,302-ft Interval in One Run

Stena Drilling challenged SLB to deliver an industry-first deepwater managed pressure drilling (MPD) solution for its harsh-environment drillships. The goal was to create an all-OEM, deepwater MPD system that could be used across the fleet and meet DNV GL certification requirements, supporting tender needs for two transferable systems.

SLB developed and deployed the first complete, all-OEM, reservoir-to-flare-stack integrated deepwater MPD system, including custom components such as the integrated riser joint and @balance Speed sealed rotating system. The system was delivered in 12 months with DNV GL certification, installed on the Stena Carron, and enabled Stena Drilling to drill a 5,302-ft interval in one run with 36 MPD connections while holding constant bottomhole pressure, reducing BOP running time by as much as 8 hours.
